#BibleLesson Thoughts on Questions on Acts 26-27 on 9/15

My Sunday school class/Life Group is studying the book of Acts. We discussed these questions yesterday. I encourage you to jot your thoughts down.
I'll post some comments from the class discussion on Wednesday.

If you’d like a PDF file of the questions, email me at crd.author@gmail.com.

There is a timeline of Paul's life at the end of the post.

Ch 26

Vv 1-32
How does Paul respond to Festus interruption?
  • He declares his sanity.
  • Uses "Noble" to describe Festus.
  • Calls his answer "sober truth," his rationale is reasonable.
Specifically, what do we learn about Paul’s strategy here?
  • He wants Agrippta to keep listening, so he talks over Festus to the king.
V28 is one of the most famous in all of Acts. How does it read in
different translations?
  • Acts 26:28 (WNT) Agrippa answered, "In brief, you are doing your best to persuade me to become a Christian."
  • Acts 26:28 (MSG) But Agrippa did answer: "Keep this up much longer and you'll make a Christian out of me!"
  • Acts 26:28 (KJV) Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.
  • Acts 26:28 (HNV) Agrippa said to Sha'ul, "With a little persuasion are you trying to make me a Messianic?"
  • Acts 26:28 (GNT) Agrippa said to Paul, "In this short time do you think you will make me a Christian?"
Paul’s reply is classic Paul.
  • 29 Paul said, “I pray to God, that whether with little or with much, not only you, but also all that hear me today, might become such as I am, except for these bonds.”
How does it apply to us today?
  • "A man convinced against his will is of his own opinion still."
  • Are we willing to say, "be like me," as Paul does?
  • By continuing to pray for those who we don't know are Christians.
V32 is another well-known verse. Do you think Agrippa was being truthful? Explain
  • Festus is being chastized for the way he handled Paul's trial.
  • Agrippa thinks Festus is out of his depth in his position.

Ch 27 - Vv 1-12

Have a map of “Paul’s Journey to Rome” ready to look at as we go through this chapter.
This photo will be in most of the remaining posts from Acts.
Who gets on the boat headed for Rome?

  • Paul
  • Other prisoners
  • A Centurion

Why do they need a centurion?
  • There are prisoners being transported to Rome.
  • Agrippa had access to the Imperial Guard.
We got this far this week.
What happens in Sidon? Why is it significant enough for Luke to mention?

The crowd changes boats in Myra. (Check your Bible’s comments.) Do you think the captain of the new ship was happy? Explain.
This is not a good time of year to sail in the Mediterranean Sea. What evidence does Luke provide to support that in vv7-9?
What does Paul advise? What do the decision-makers choose to do?
Whose decision it to ignore Paul? What’s the rationale?
Look at the map of this journey. How far is Phoenix from Fair Havens?

Ch 27 - Vv 13-26

Keep the map of “Paul’s Journey to Rome” handy.
What turns out to be a mistaken omen of good things to come?
Vv 14-20 are a litany of disaster. List each of the increasingly dire circumstances Paul and the ship encounter.
In v21, Paul is Paul. How might that have helped his speech in vv22-26?
Make two lists from vv21-26. 1. What Paul says about himself. 2. What else he says.

Ch 27 - Vv 27-44

Keep the map of “Paul’s Journey to Rome” handy.
Look at the map. Just how far off course is the boat at this time?
What are soundings? Why are they important to sailors?
How does the centurion’s response to Paul in v31 differ from his response in v11? Why?
Paul speaks to the passengers and crew in vv33-35. What are his key points and the listeners’ responses?
Vv36-41 describe the shipwreck itself. What ultimately seals the ship’s doom?
List what the centurion does in vv42-44 and explain why each significant.
Despite the loss of the ship’s cargo, what is the good news in v44?
