THOUGHTS ON HEBREWS STUDY QUESTIONS
My Sunday School Life Group is studying Hebrews. Every Monday, I post questions that were discussed the day before in Sunday School. I invite you to ponder/think about them and jot down your thoughts.
On Wednesdays, I post some of the ideas that came up in the Life Group's discussion for you to consider and compare with your thoughts.
These questions were discussed in my Life Group Monday. This post presents thoughts from the class discussion.
Chapter 8Vv 1-13
What’s the point of Ch 8?
More details about the covenant. Verse 6 is the key verse.
"Better covenant" refers to Christ's position as the eternal High Priest.
Hebrews 7:22 says that Jesus is the guarantee of the new covenant.
What are two jobs of a High Priest?
1) Offer gifts and 2) Offer sacrifices to God. Verse 3.
The constant reference to the High Priest is to reinforce Christ's superiority to the earthly High Priests.
What does “copy [type] and shadow” in v5 mean? What is being/has been copied?

| This is the Tabernacle itself. Below shows it "in place" while the Hebrews were wandering in the wilderness. The purple line behind the Altar of Incense is the veil. That veil--then in the Temple--that is torn from top to bottom when Jesus dies on the cross. |
How does the author show how important “copy [type] and shadow” is?

| The Tabernacle complex was large (150' x 75'). It was packed and transported each time the Israelites saw the pillar of smoke (God's presence) rise off the Holy of Holies. Dismantling and packing the complex must have taken more than one day. |

| These were part of the Tabernacle move each time. There are specific directions for packing and transporting these in Exodus 36-40. |
Hebrews listening to this letter would have grasped the importance of the comparisons to the Tabernacle.
V6 ends with an interesting phrase. How come some of God’s promises be better than others?
But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises. Hebrews 8:6
Earthly priests were mediators of the Old Covenant.
Christ--the Mediator--negotiated a better covenant.
The "better promises" refer to the removing of the recurring need for animal sacrifices in the New Covenant. Christ was the one sacrifice for all forever.
What was wrong with the first covenant? How long was the wrong one in place?
The first covenant had no provision for a lasting forgiveness of sin. Humanity cannot not sin.
The Old Covenant was good.
The Old Covenant was fulfilled by Christ's death.
The New Covenant is better!
The Old Covenant was in place almost 1500 years--from the giving of the 10 Commandments to the Crucifixion.
