Thoughts on Questions from Acts Ch 18 on 5/26

My Sunday school class/Life Group is studying the book of Acts. I posted these questions this Monday and encouraged you to jot your thoughts down.
This is Wednesday. This post consists of some comments from the class discussion.

If you’d like a PDF file of the questions, email me at crd.author@gmail.com.

There is a timeline of Paul's life at the end of the post.

Chapter 18

Vv1-17
Why was Paul immediately attracted to Aquila?

Both were tentmakers.
  • One commentary said that because of the Olympic Games of 51 A.D., there was a  great demand for tents in that area.
What’s Paul’s strategy in Corinth?

  • He went to the synagogue
  • He got a job.
  • He tried to persuade Jews to follow Jesus.
  • Pretty much his regular plan, except for the job
How does he change his ministry tactic when Silas and Timothy arrive?
  • Paul gives up tent making.

Why?
  • Silas and Timothy bring money collected in Athens for his ministry.

And when I was with you and was in need, I did not burden anyone, for the brothers who came from Macedonia supplied my need. So I refrained and will refrain from burdening you in any way.  2 Corinthians 11:9

In v6, Paul makes a final break with whom?
  • Jews in Corinth
Why?
  • Because they blasphemed Christ.
  • Verse 6 sounds a lot like what Jesus told the 70 disciples He sent out as missionaries in Matthew 10:14.
14 And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town.

Why does Paul decide to stay in Corinth for over one year?
  • The Gentile Christians.
  • The leader of the Synagogue
  • His vision in Acts Ch 16:10

And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.

The incident in vv12-17 illustrates the attitudes of many people today when it comes to religion. How many different attitudes can you find?
  • Disinterest - Procounsel
  • Anger - Jews
  • Dismissed - Procounsel
  • Unwilling - Jews
  • Backlash - Jews beat Sosthenes
From various commentaries.
  • Two groups of Jews in Corinth.
  • Orthodox - want nothing to do with Rome
  • Progressive - use their Roman citizenship to their advantage whenever possible.
  • Erastus - Tow treasurer and a Christian. There is archeological proof of his existence.
  • Sosthenes - Became a believer

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes1 Corinthians 1:1

What has happened in the synagogue between v8 and v17?

  • A change in leadership.
  • According to at least the orthodox Jews, the core of the Corinthian Jews was being led astray.

We got this far this week.

Here's a link to a great Timeline of the Apostle Paul. I recommend bookmarking it.
