#Bible Expressions of Faith. Acts Ch 18. Priscilla, Aquila, and Apollos

24 Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures.25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor[a]and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John.26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.
Acts 18:24-26
  • Apollos knows Scripture.
  • He doesn’t know Jesus as the Messiah and Savior.
  • Priscilla and Aquila listen to him in the Synagogue and realize his knowledge is incomplete.

  1. They could have confronted him in the Synagogue.
  2. They could have lectured to him in the foyer.
  3. They didn’t do anything like that.

“…they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.”
  • They included life-changing information about Jesus and the Holy Spirit.
  • I’m not sure what more adequately is or how it differs from adequately.
  • Whatever it is, it was

  1. done away from other people.
  2. done in love.
  3. was effective

Apollos
  • begins his own missionary journey.
  • is a strong contender as the author of the Book of Hebrews.
  • becomes a prominent leader in the church. (1 Corinthians 1:12; 3:-6, 22; 4:6; 16:12)

The takeaways
  1. If you see something, say something. Priscilla and Aquila did this.
  2. Build upon what someone knows is true. Priscilla and Aquilla did this.
  3. Let the student surpass the teacher. Even Paul does this as we read in 1 Corinthians.
  4. Make yourself available to explain when needed. Again, Priscilla and Aquila.
  5. Always be open to LISTEN and LEARN. This is the key to Apollos’ success.

Because, after the chat, Apollos “vigorously refuted his Jewish opponents in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah.”
