#Bible Thoughts on Questions from Acts Ch 18 on 6/2
My Sunday school class/Life Group is studying the book of Acts. I posted these questions this Monday and encouraged you to jot your thoughts down.
This is Wednesday. This post consists of some comments from the class discussion.
If you’d like a PDF file of the questions, email me at crd.author@gmail.com.
There is a timeline of Paul's life at the end of the post.
Chapter 18
Vv 18-28
Why did Paul cut his hair?
- Probably signaling the end of a Nazarite vow. Shaving the head 30 days before the end date indicated the vow was kept.
- Ending the vow was done in the Temple in Jerusalem.
Paul seems to be a slow learner. Who does he go to first in Ephesus?
- Goes to the Synagogue and preaches Christ as Messiah.
How are the Ephesian Jews different from others in the area?
- They listened to Paul and wanted to hear what he had to say.
After a year+ in Corinth, what evidence to we have of Paul’s restless spirit?
- He retraces his stops in this trip on his way to Jerusalem (Remember the Nazarite vow.)
- Visits the churches started.
- Encourages and strengthens those churchs and their leaders.
Who do we meet in v24? Describe him.
- Apollos
What do Priscilla and Aquilla do to help Apollos?
- They took him aside (or home) and explained what happened at Pentecost and since.
How do they do it?
- By approaching him with love and grace, Priscilla and Aquila are able to help Apollos correct his preaching.
- They were not confrontational.
- To Apollos's credit, he LISTENED to and CHANGED based on the new truth he heard.
What does it appear that Apollos is better at than Paul?
- Reaching the Jews.
When Apollos decided to go on to Achaia province, his Ephesian friends gave their blessing and wrote a letter of recommendation for him, urging the disciples there to welcome him with open arms. The welcome paid off: Apollos turned out to be a great help to those who had become believers through God’s immense generosity. He was particularly effective in public debate with the Jews as he brought out proof after convincing proof from the Scriptures that Jesus was in fact God’s Messiah.
Acts 18:27-28 (The Message)
Come back to this blog on Friday for a deeper dive into Priscilla, Aquilla, and Apollos.
