Miracle #6 – Jesus Calms a Storm – Mark 4:35-41

Overall impression

  • The stern is the best place to sleep on a boat in a storm.
  • The disciples, once again, are amazed.
  • The winds on Lake Galilee are increased as they move through the valley.
  • Other boats were with Jesus’s boat.
  • This was Jesus’s first opportunity to go to the Gentiles who were across Galilee from where they got on the boat.

If you were a reporter for “The Galilee Gazette,” what would your headline be for this story? Explain?

  • Jesus calms the waves!
  • Wicked storm abruptly ends
  • Another miracle by the Galilean?

Why did Jesus allow the storm to happen?

  • Life without turmoil is not worth living.
  • He was ready for another miracle.
  • To test the disciples’ faith.
  • God allowed it to show Jesus’s authority.

If you were Jesus’s 13th disciple, what would you have done when everyone thought the boat would sink?

  • Join the panic.
  • Turn to Jesus to do something.
  • One hand to help bail the ship, the other hand to save myself.

Why?

  • I’m a marginal swimmer.
  • I knew He could save us.
  • To help with bail water.

By the end of this event were the disciples more afraid of the storm or Jesus?

Jesus – 90% of the class / Storm  10% of the class.

Why?

  • I forgot about the storm after Jesus ended it.
  • Following the Messiah, but not yet realizing He was the Son of God.
  • It’s the next level of faith in Jesus.
  • Because: He got up and spoke sharp words to the wind. He said to the sea, “Be quiet! Be still.” At once the wind stopped blowing. There were no more waves. V39

Up to this point, the disciples seem to assume Jesus is just a better-than-average rabbi.

Agree/Explain

  • He was the first rabbi to make sense, but the disciples had a narrow view of Jesus at this time.

Disagree/Explain.

BONUS THOUGHTS THIS WEEK

Did the other boats following Jesus just to be near Him or out fishing feel the storm? If so, how did they react when it stops abruptly?

Verse 27: Jesus is in control of nature.

We Got This Far This Week

NEXT WEEK THE CLASS DOES NOT MEET. MISSION CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE IS HAVING A 4TH OF JULY PANCAKE BREAKFAST ON THE GROUNDS DURING THAT HOUR.
