#BibleStudy. Timeless Truths. Living With God - Part 2

COMMANDMENT 4.

“Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance

Exodus 20:8, 18

Commandment #4 is the balancing point where the emphasis shifts from God to human interpersonal relationships.

Remember

  • The commandment begins with this term. Today you have many things (schedules!) to remember. The command lays claim to some of your time and sanctifies it.
  • Prior to this command, Hebrews worshipped when: it was needed and/or it was convenient.
  • It takes enormous courage to live and as Command #4 demands. Some things might be missed or go unfinished. You might lose out.
  • Time is important to you. In a sense, it controls you because of your schedule.
  • Pharaoh enslaved the Hebrews and controlled all aspects of their lives, even their time.
  • In this command, God creates rest. If/When you obey this command, it shows the world who your God is.
  • The time God claims becomes a catalyst for change. In Exodus 7, God tells Moses to tell pharaoh that the Hebrews need time to worship.
  • The world is not looking for a miracle, it's looking to be a part of a miracle. Short story: pharaoh let Israel worship.
  • There is a testimony of your transformation when God lays claim on your time.

The Sabbath

12 Then the Lord said to Moses, 13 “Say to the Israelites, ‘You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy.

14 “‘Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people. 15 For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death. 16 The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. 17 It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’”

18 When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.

Exodus 31:12-18

Worship time isn't for anything except to testify that

  1. that God rules your life and
  2. of the change God has made in you…

so that your God is not out in the world but here with you.
