Miracle #7 – Healing a Man Possessed by Many Demons – Mark 1:1-20

What’s happened after you explained to a friend/relative how much Christ has done for you and your family?

  • This was given as a prompt for self-reflection.

If you didn’t have an answer to the previous question, what would you like to tell them? When?

I’ll check back before the end of the study of this miracle to see if anyone wants to share their thoughts.

How did the disciples react to this event?

  • No one knows. They aren’t mentioned in this text.

How long did it take for Jesus and the disciples to go “across the lake?

  • Six hours.
  • Overnight.

Although no one knows the exact location of Gerasenes/Gadarenes, what are clues for its location?

  • Look for a cemetery.
  • In the area known as Decapolis, ten cities of significance in Scripture.
  • It’s on the other side of Lake Galilee from the Feeding the 5000 miracle.

Demons were dreaded by 1st-century people. What are some reasons for that?

  • They are still dreaded today in most of the world.
  • Demons are powerful.
  • There is no explanation for some medical conditions.

How did the possessed man feel?

  • Matthew describes two men with split personalities in this event.
  • Relief. Like when a migraine passes.
  • Maybe lost at first when he realized the demons were gone.

Why do the demons call out Jesus’ true identity?

  • Historically, saying the name of a person gave demon’s the upper hand.
  • To let Jesus know they know who He is,
  • They wanted to delay getting sent to eternal punishment.
  • They know the whole game plan.

What does Jesus do that finally causes the demons to leave?

  • He gives the demons permission to leave the man.
  • They even got to go where they wanted.

What did the demons mean in verse 7c?

  • Torture: sent to Hell early.
  • Avoiding the destruction of Satan at the end of the age.
