Until we finish, my Sunday school class is studying Miracles of Jesus. This week is the last week discussed miracles throughout the Bible.

Miracle #7 – Healing a Man Possessed by Many Demons – Mark 1:1-20

What did the demons fear most?

• Jesus-they didn’t want 1) to be sent out of the area; 2) torture; 3) sent into the abyss and be tortured forever.

Why did the demons need Jesus’s permission to enter the pigs?

• There were two options for them: pigs or the abyss.
• Jesus has authority and they knew that.

Going into pigs shows what about demons?

• They are real.
• They don’t want to die.

What does a Jew do if he touches a pig?

• (S)he is unclean until they have ceremonial cleansing.

How do the townspeople react? 

• They are upset.
• They tell Jesus to leave.

Why?

• Loss of income. 
• Frightened by the change in the man.
• Ultimately they were more upset by the loss of the pigs than they were happy for the formally demon-possessed man.

How does the healed man react?

• Wants to go with Jesus.

Contrast Jesus' instructions here to his instructions to the healed leper.

• Man: Go home and witness to gentiles. That would be the only way they knew about Christ.
• Leper: Go tell the priests. Jews should have been able to see Jesus as Messiah from their knowledge of Scripture.

How did this study impact your beliefs/attitudes toward demon possession?

• Demons are scary.
• I’m glad it’s over.
• Demon possession is still around. “Medicine” often tries to rationalize demons away.

What are you asking God for in your community and/or our church?

• This is for personal introspection.
