#BibleStudy Thoughts on Discussion Questions on Acts 24 on 8/18

My Sunday school class/Life Group is studying the book of Acts. I posted these questions this Monday and encouraged you to jot your thoughts down.

This is Wednesday. This post consists of some comments from the class discussion.

If you’d like a PDF file of the questions, email me at crd.author@gmail.com.

There is a timeline of Paul's life at the end of the post.

Ch 24
Vv 1-26
In vv17-26, Paul gets to the heart of the matter. Whom does he suggest Felix talk to?
  • His accusers.
  • Jews from Turkey/Asia Minor. The Sanhedrin.

Why?
  • To get the true story.
  • It was a Jewish problem.

What is Paul’s explanation of why he’s on trial?
  • He spoke of resurrection as a truth.

Felix adjourns the proceedings while waiting for whom?
  • Lysias, the commander in Jerusalem.

What does he have to do with anything?
  • He sent Paul to Felix.
  • And he sent a letter explaining his view of the situation with Paul’s military escort.

One aspect of Paul’s imprisonment it uncommon. What and why do you think that privilege was granted?
  • He was allowed visitors and to have access to his own food.
  • He’s a Roman citizen by birth.

Oh, my, look what significant fact we find out inv24. That sly Luke.
  • Felix’s wife is a Jewess. (Drusilla, Herod’s daughter)
  • And having heard these things, Felix delayed them -- having known more exactly of the things concerning the way -- saying, 'When Lysias the chief captain may come down, I will know fully the things concerning you;' Acts 24:22(Young's Literal Translation)

Paul preaches to Felix and Drusilla. What are his “points”?
Righteousness
  • living right
  • justice
  • goodness
  • right relations with God and his people
  • being right with God

Temperance
  • chastity
  • self-control
  • honorable behavior
  • personal integrity
  • a life of moral discipline
  • being the boss over our own desires

Judgment to come
  • the ·time when God will judge the world
  • standing before One Who will tell us if we are guilty

Why would Felix be afraid?
  • He was hoping for a bribe from Paul and got convicted by Paul’s preaching.

How does the end of v25 read in various translations?
There’s a common feeling in each translation below. These are from https://biblehub.com/acts/24-25.htm
  • New International Version Felix was afraid and said, "That's enough for now! You may leave. When I find it convenient, I will send for you."
  • Berean Literal Bible Felix, having become frightened, answered, "Go away for the present, and having found opportunity, I will call for you."
  • Good News Translation Felix was afraid and said, "You may leave now. I will call you again when I get the chance."
  • Aramaic Bible in Plain English Felix was afraid and he said, “Go now, and when I have a space I will send for you.”
  • GOD'S WORD® Translation Felix became afraid and said, "That's enough for now. You can go. When I find time, I'll send for you again."
  • Darby Bible Translation Felix, being filled with fear, answered, Go for the present, and when I get an opportunity I will send for thee;
  • Webster's Bible Translation Felix trembled, and answered, depart for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.
  • Weymouth New Testament Felix became alarmed and said, "For the present leave me, and when I can find a convenient opportunity I will send for you."
  • World English Bible Felix was terrified, and answered, "Go your way for this time, and when it is convenient for me, I will summon you."
  • What's the common feeling?

How interested was Felix in his soul?
  • Not a lot
  • Willing to wait until it was convenient.
  • A little afraid.

We got this far this week.

Here's a link to a great Timeline of the Apostle Paul. I recommend bookmarking it.
